Tuesday training at Santa Anita was conducted under clear skies with temperatures in the high 40's climbing to the low 70's. Several Europeans cleared quarantine and came out but all on the main track, none on the turf course despite the course being open for gallops at 10am, however the Aidan O'Brien string arrived at 7:45pm Monday and will not clear quarantine until Thursday. The post position draw was conducted Monday afternoon, so check out all the entries, post positions, and morning line odds here later that night.
Here are photos for 68 horses on Tuesday morning. All Breeders' Cup contenders must be on the grounds 72 hours prior to their race. Click the small picture to see a larger version.
Elate (Classic) returned to the track Tuesday after breezing 3f in 36 3/5 Sunday, turning in an easy gallop under exercise rider Juan Quintero. "I couldn't have been more happy with her the way we came into the Personal Ensign," trainer Bill Mott said. "I thought she was doing great and we got beat in a spectacular race. And I thought she went into the Spinster in good shape so you never know. But she is good right now. I'd say to me, she looks as good as she did going into those two races. We just hopes she holds that form."
Mongolian Groom (Classic) jogged 2m under exercise rider Jesse Cardenas. "I'm OK with the post position. Nine is good," trainer Enebish Ganbat said. "I like being outside."
Seeking the Soul (Classic) came on the track at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday and had an easy gallop under the watchful eye of trainer Dallas Stewart. "He trained beautifully," Stewart said. "He's training really well since we left him here. He's comfortable. He's got three works over the track and is really doing well. We're trying to win, that's our goal, so we wanted to get a race over the track (in the Awesome Again). We were coming off a bad race at Del Mar, where he got the Thumps and it just didn't work out. He's healthy and he's back at 100 percent. I'm happy. I'm happy anytime I'm in a big race."
Vino Rosso (Classic) galloped 1 1/4m Tuesday on the morning after arriving at Santa Anita from Belmont Park. "You get a good run to the first turn and we'll try to establish position. You can have your plan, but some of that is dictated by what some of the other horses do. I think we can get a trip where we're in a good stalking position," Todd Pletcher said. "We know he likes the mile and a quarter. We'll hope to put him in a position to where he can show his strength."
War of Will (Classic) had a routine gallop and trip through the paddock Tuesday under Shane Tripp. "You can tell after a race how he cools out how he handles a race and how he handles the track," Mark Casse said. "For instance, after the Preakness, 15 minutes after the Preakness he was fine. It took him hours to get over the Belmont. He was just stressed. His second breeze here (at Santa Anita) when he went, not a deep breath. He came back and he recovered quickly."
Yoshida (Classic) galloped Tuesday under Juan Quintero, having worked a half-mile in 50 flat Sunday. "He's very good. He's a good competitor and he's done well at a mile and a quarter," trainer Bill Mott said. "In the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs, he got beat a length and a half and finished fourth but ran a very good race to a very good group. Thunder Snow and Accelerate were in front of us and I think Thunder Snow beat us a nose. If he repeats that race, that will put him in the mix."
Ambassadorial (Dirt Mile) walk and trot one lap of the main track with Abi Harrison in the saddle. Trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam said, "That was good. I decided to go out a bit later today as it can be a lot colder in the earlier slots and as he has not done any real exercise for five days I thought it would be easier on his lungs and there would be less chance of pulling a muscle."
Blue Chipper (Dirt Mile) the first South Korean challenger in the Breeders' Cup, breezed 3f in :34 4/5 this morning out on the main track and his connections very pleased with what they saw in the preparation for the $1 million Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile. |
Coal Front (Dirt Mile) galloped 1 1/4m Tuesday morning at Santa Anita, preparing for a start in Saturday's Dirt Mile. "He's coming off a good, competitive race at Parx going a two-turn mile, giving us confidence to bring him here for the two-turn race," trainer Todd Pletcher said. "He showed us in Dubai, on his day, that he's a world-class miler. He's in good form and he'll need to be at his best in a race like this."
Firenze Fire (Sprint) drew post 3 as a 12-1 shot. Irad Ortiz Jr. rides for trainer Jason Servis.
Giant Expectations (Dirt Mile) trainer Peter Eurton will be hoping the third time is the charm, when he saddles the 6 yo for Saturday's Dirt Mile. However, the stakes-winning horse will have to overcome the rail post position. "The key for us will be the break, because our horse may end up standing in the gate for a bit before the start," Eurton said. "We've got a little speed, so I know that we won't be taking back."
Improbable (Dirt Mile) jogged a mile Tuesday morning at Santa Anita Park. The chestnut City Zip colt had his final Dirt Mile work Sunday – a bullet 5f in 59 1/5. He drew post two and is the 3-1 second choice in the field of 10. Veteran Rafael Bejarano has picked up the mount on Improbable, the beaten favorite in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.
Omaha Beach (Dirt Mile) blew out 3f in 36 1/5 under exercise rider Nestor Capitaine. Trainer Richard Mandella said, "We had set it up to work three-eighths tomorrow three days out, tomorrow. Just something easy in :37 and change. Then I got to thinking about the works I gave him before the Santa Anita Sprint and thought that if he remembered those works, he wasn't going to go in :37. I thought it might be better to be four days out if he did take the bit and go faster. He was perfect this morning. He went 36 1/5 like a baby. He continues to prove what a class act he is."
Blue Prize (Distaff) galloped 1 1/2m under exercise rider Hiram Rosario shortly before 8am. "Well, we know the speed is inside of us; everybody is inside of us," trainer Ignacio Correas IV said with a laugh. "It is a mile track and you get a good run into the first turn. I thought it was bad last year in the Spinster (at Keeneland) when she had the 11 hole and she still won."
Dunbar Road (Distaff) had an easy gallop of the Santa Anita main track at 7:45am. The $350,000 Keeneland September 2017 purchase enters the Distaff as one of multiple fillies with a chance to sew up a year-end 3yo filly championship with a victory in the 9f race.

"She's in great form and I love how she's working. She's been very impressive in her training."

We decided to put a hood on Hey Gaman to hopefully settle him down as I was expecting both of our horses to be a bit fresh and I was pleasantly surprised as they were both much better than I expected."

Got Stormy (Mile) put in another strong gallop before coming back through the paddock. "I knew that going in (the Woodbine Mile) would be a tall task for her," Mark Casse said. "I probably know Woodbine as well as anybody and do you know how many good horses, good milers get beat there? And the reason is it's not really a true mile, it's would be more like running a mile and a sixteenth. She's a true miler. Then you throw in a little soft ground and it made it even more difficult. So I wasn't surprised at all. I was actually proud of her to run second."

Imperial Hint (Sprint) got acquainted with the Santa Anita Tuesday morning while jogging the wrong way around the racetrack two days after arriving from New Jersey's Monmouth Park for a start in Saturday's Sprint. "I definitely didn't want to get in the same position that we got in Dubai, where we were on the inside," said Carvajal, whose trainee finished third in the March 30 Golden Shaheen at Meydan after becoming involved in a contested pace. "I wanted to be on the outside. That way he has a target in front of him and less traffic."
Landeskog (Sprint) will scratch from the Sprint, trainer Doug O'Neill confirmed Tuesday morning. "He's just telling us he's not 100 percent so it's a pretty easy move to make. It's nothing major. He tracked today but it was just an indication we had that he's not 100 percent so we're going to wait. From our standpoint, it's sad because it's such a big day or racing. But you don't run them unless they're 100 percent." Ironically, the gelding's namesake Gabriel Landeskog , captain of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, also is currently sidelined with a lower-body injury. "I heard the namesake got hurt too," O'Neill said. "Maybe it's twin pain or something."
