Breeders' Cup Workouts

Date: 10/30/2019

Wednesday training at Santa Anita was conducted under clear skies with temperatures in the high 40's climbing to the high 60's. Several European entrants took to the turf during the 8:30 break, however the Aidan O'Brien string arrived at 7:45pm Monday and will not clear quarantine until Thursday. The post position draw was conducted Monday afternoon, so check out all the entries, post positions, and morning line odds here later that night.

Here are photos for 42 horses on Wednesday morning. All Breeders' Cup contenders must be on the grounds 72 hours prior to their race. Click the small picture to see a larger version.

horse racing breeders cup Elate (Classic) galloped once around and toured the paddock under exercise rider Juan Quintero. "We're throwing her in deep water. We seldom run the fillies against the colts unless we think we've got a top class horse and one that would fit the race," Bill Mott said.  "I think she fits the conditions of the race very well and she's proven it. Of course we're running against good competition so she still has to run her very best race to compete."
horse racing breeders cup Mongolian Groom (Classic) jogged 1 mile then galloped 1 mile under exercise rider Jesse Cardenas. "I want to do exactly what I did before the Awesome Again," trainer Enebish Ganbat said.
horse racing breeders cup Owendale (Classic) arrived Tuesday from Kentucky and galloped on Wednesday. Trainer Brad Cox said, "He hasn't run a bad race all year. Once he took off this spring, when he won the Lexington, that was his coming out party. It showed he can run with the big horses. His training has been the exact same all year. He's a very consistent horse and keeps getting better. He galloped a mile and a half this morning and was putting off 16s for every eighth (of a mile). He couldn't be doing any better."
horse racing breeders cup Seeking the Soul (Classic) followed his usual routine of galloping 1 ½m before daylight and continues to "train beautifully," according to his trainer Dallas Stewart.
horse racing breeders cup Vino Rosso (Classic) galloped 1 3/8 miles, stood in the starting gate, and schooled in the paddock.  "He was training super and it seemed like the Santa Anita Gold Cup was coming up at the right time," Todd Pletcher said. "He was doing well and we felt getting a race over the track would let us see where we are as far as the Breeders' Cup."
horse racing breeders cup War of Will (Classic) galloped in company with stablemate Got Stormy then schooled in the starting gate. "In all honesty, he's thrown some clunkers at us that I don't really know why. So that's a bit disappointing," Mark Casse said. "He needs to come with his Derby race (on Saturday). Everything we've kind of done up to this now has been looking at how we did the Kentucky Derby. I think he came with his ‘A' game in the Kentucky Derby. Probably a B-plus game in the Preakness. Our feeling is he's older, he's more mature now and why not. If he comes with his big race, then everyone will know he's there."
horse racing breeders cup Yoshida (Classic) galloped once around and toured the paddock under exercise rider Juan Quintero. Trainer Bill Mott said, "I mean it's just interesting how sometimes you can have a horse who is so good on the dirt. I mean you can have a champion horse and run them on the turf and they just don't do that well. It should make him an interesting stallion prospect just the fact that he's done both."
horse racing breeders cup Diamond Oops (Dirt Mile) drew post 9 for trainer Patrick Biancone. Julien Leparoux rides the 15-1 shot.
horse racing breeders cup Giant Expectations (Dirt Mile) reared up and unseated his rider while awaiting the training session (see above). Both were fine, the rider remounted and the gallop went on as scheduled.
horse racing breeders cup Improbable (Dirt Mile) jogged a mile Wednesday morning at Santa Anita Park. The chestnut City Zip colt had his final Dirt Mile work Sunday – a bullet 5f in 59 1/5. He drew post two and is the 3-1 second choice in the field of 10. Veteran Rafael Bejarano has picked up the mount on Improbable, the beaten favorite in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.
horse racing breeders cup Mr. Money (Dirt Mile) left Louisville early Tuesday morning for Santa Anita and a run in the Dirt Mile. Trained by Bret Calhoun, Mr. Money will break from post position four under regular rider Gabriel Saez and is listed at 6-1 on the morning line. "The post is fine," Calhoun said. "We all just need some racing luck now."
horse racing breeders cup Omaha Beach (Dirt Mile) schooled in the paddock. Trainer Richard Mandella reported that he came out of his final work Tuesday in good shape and remains on target for Saturday's race.
horse racing breeders cup Whitmore (Sprint) drew post 7 for trainer Ron Moquett. Flavien Prat gets the call Saturday aboard the 15-1 shot.
horse racing breeders cup Midnight Bisou (Distaff) galloped an easy 1 1/4 miles with Angel Garcia aboard, according to trainer Steve Asmussen's assistant Scott Blasi. "Mike (Smith) rides her every day and has a tremendous amount of confidence in her, so however the pace goes, he's the one riding," Blasi said. "Coming into the race, she gets pretty sharp. She knows it's game time, now. Like most good horses, they get into that routine. They know what you're doing with them and she knows she's running this week."
horse racing breeders cup Serengeti Empress (Distaff) jogging 1 mile under exercise rider William Chavez for trainer Tom Amoss in preparation for Saturday's Distaff. Winner of the Kentucky Oaks as well as a winner in two Grade 2 races, she was seventh in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs.
horse racing breeders cup Street Band (Distaff) galloped on the main track and schooled in the starting gate under trainer Larry Jones. "She got a little antsy in the paddock, but that's just her," Jones said. "She galloped nicely and was perfect in the gate."
horse racing breeders cup Covfefe (Filly and Mare Sprint) galloped once around. Trainer Brad Cox said, "She means a lot to us. She's fast. She's an unbelievable talent. I know there's some question with the post, but she's two for two from the one hole. It's going to be all about the first quarter, first three-eighths of a mile. It will be all about where she can lay and how comfortable she can be. If she's comfortable down the backstretch, she's as fit as any racehorse can get and she's worked as well as any racehorse can work. She's going to be tough. I really like her and I'm excited about her."
horse racing breeders cup Dawn the Destroyer (Filly and Mare Sprint) drew post 12 for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. Tyler Gaffalione rides the 12-1 shot on Saturday.
horse racing breeders cup Heavenhasmynikki (Filly and Mare Sprint) is a 20-1 outsider out of post 3. Ricardo Santana Jr. gets the call for trainer Bob Hess Jr.
horse racing breeders cup Lady Ninja (Filly and Mare Sprint) drew the 6 hole for trainer Simon Callaghan. Flavien Prat rides the 6-1 chance.
horse racing breeders cup Selcourt (Filly and Mare Sprint) schooled in the paddock at 10:30am.
horse racing breeders cup Castle Lady (Filly and Mare Turf) worked 3f in 36 seconds, 2nd fastest of 13.
horse racing breeders cup Fanny Logan (Filly and Mare Turf) had strong canter on the turf with race rider Frankie Dettori in the saddle. "It's great to be here and Fanny Logan did a nice canter there. Frankie was happy with her," John Gosden said.
horse racing breeders cup Eight Rings (Juvenile) stood in the gate for exercise rider Humberto Gomez then galloped 1m. Assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes said that colt did their exercise with high energy.
horse racing breeders cup Shoplifted (Juvenile) worked 3f in 37 2/5, 5th fastest of 13 under exercise rider Angel Garcia. "He's fine," assistant trainer Scott Blasi said. "He just did an easy gallop."
horse racing breeders cup Bast (Juvenile Fillies) went out to the track with Manny Avila, stood in the gate and then galloped 1 3/8m.
horse racing breeders cup British Idiom (Juvenile Fillies) galloped at 6:45 with stablemate Covfefe. Trainer Brad Cox said, "I really like the way this filly is coming into the race. Her two works post Alcibiades have been fantastic. I think she's coming into this race every bit as good as she did the Alcibiades. I think there's going to be some speed in there. Hopefully she'll relax right off it. She'll be close to it, but not it. That's what I'm seeing on paper. If she can relax and give us the race she gave us in the Alcibiades, she's going to be tough in there."
horse racing breeders cup Selflessly (Juvenile Fillies Turf) galloped 1 1/4 mile with stablemates Structor and Without Parole at approximately 6:45. "That's not a good draw for her, but she's training well," Chad Brown said. "With 2-year-olds, as they're rapidly developing earlier on in their careers, you want to see them coming around at the right time and she seems to be doing that."
horse racing breeders cup Gear Jockey (Juvenile Turf) galloped on the main track under Crystal Conning. "I didn't think he'd get in," trainer Rusty Arnold said of the third-place finisher in the Bourbon at Keeneland in his most recent start. "He is really doing well and he thinks he is something back in the barn. When he made the lead, I didn't think he would get caught. I don't think it was the distance; I think it was a question of experience."
horse racing breeders cup Cambria (Juvenile Turf Sprint) jogged once around. Blake Heap, overseeing the Wesley Ward horses, said, "We've know one another since we were teenagers," Heap said. "My father (longtime trainer Lamont Heap) employed Wesley when he was 14 to walk horses.  When Wesley first started riding, I was working around the shedrow and we became buddies.  He's been shipping his horses out to me for years. We go back about 50 years together."
horse racing breeders cup Kimari (Juvenile Turf Sprint) jogged once around. We go back about 50 years together."
horse racing breeders cup Hey Gaman (Mile) did two laps of the main track at a steady canter.
horse racing breeders cup Trais Fluors (Mile) was accompanied by a pony and did two circuits of the turf course before returning to the quarantine barn.
horse racing breeders cup Next Shares (Mile) is the second also-eligible and will need 2 scratches by Friday 9am in order to make the gate.
horse racing breeders cup Matera Sky (Sprint) worked 4f in 49 2/5, 12th fastest of 39 works. Matera Sky's connections reported "He seems in great form, we did a nice breeze up the stretch and he looked good."
horse racing breeders cup Arklow (Turf) is a 12-1 shot on Saturday. Javier Castellano rides out of post 11 for trainer Brad Cox.
horse racing breeders cup Bandua (Turf) drew post 8 for trainer Jack Sisterson. Tyler Gaffalione gets the call aboard the 20-1 shot.
horse racing breeders cup Channel Cat (Turf) galloped 1 1/4 miles. "Like you'd expect from a lot of the English Channels, they tend to get better as they get older," trainer Todd Pletcher said. "He's been consistently right there. In the Bowling Green he got a great trip and was able to win. He got not quite-as-smooth trips in his last two races."
horse racing breeders cup Leinster (Turf Sprint) will exit post seven as an 8-1 proposition on the morning line. "The post is what it is," trainer Rusty Arnold said. "It is the jocks' problem, not mine." Tyler Gaffalione will be aboard for the 4yo's fourth consecutive start.
horse racing breeders cup Pure Sensation (Turf Sprint) drew post 2 for trainer Christophe Clement. Paco Lopez rides the 5-1 contender on Saturday.
horse racing breeders cup Stubbins (Turf Sprint) is a 12-1 shot for trainer Doug O'Neill. Flavien Prat rides from post 5.
