Note: Sonneteer is still a maiden despite 10 lifetime starts including 3 starts in stakes races. He started 5 times as a 2-year-old in Southern California managing 2 seconds and a third in maiden special weight company. He made his 2017 debut in the California Derby at Golden Gate, finishing 4th. He went back to Santa Anita for 2 maiden races, finishing 2nd and 3rd. Then he shipped out to Oaklawn to finish 2nd in the Rebel Stakes (G2) and 4th in the Arkansas Derby (G1). Buchanan (1884), Sir Barton (1919) and Brokers Tip (1933) are the only maidens so far to win the Kentucky Derby. The last maiden to run in the Derby was Nationalore who finished 9th in 1998. In the Kentucky Derby (G1) he finished 16th beaten 26 1/4 lengths at 40-1 odds.
