World Championships Breeders' Cup Workouts
Training hours on Monday were not typical for Southern California this time of year, with overcast skies, a threat of rain, and temperatures in the 50's and not expected out of the low 60's today. The main track was fast and there was no turf training after rain last night. Thankfully the rain this morning held off until after training was over. Todd Pletcher's New York-based horses were still en route to California and will test the Santa Anita track on Tuesday.
Here are photos for 10 of the horses on the track Monday morning. Click the small picture to see a larger version. Entries will be drawn for most of the races at 2pm and for the Classic and Distaff after 4pm. I hope to have the entries for most of the races up before they drawn the two big races.
Game On Dude had a work in company this morning going 5 furlongs in 59 flat under jockey Martin Garcia in company with stablemate Amazing Hearted. Trainer Bob Baffert said, "It's so quiet out there right now that I wanted to give him a target and get him focused. It was a terrific work for him and I'm glad we're done with that. He's a totally different horse this year. He's not the same horse that ran here last year – thank God. He's bigger, he's filled out and he's a happy horse. I've spaced his races out and that's allowed me to keep his weight on." After drawing the 9 post, owner Bernie Schiappa said, "I love our position, I love the draw. But you know it's a horse race so get him to the gate and Mike Smith will do the rest. I was hoping he would draw outside and it's a great position. Hopefully he'll get the job done and go on to be Horse of the Year. Being the favorite, there's always a little more pressure. But the horse deserves a little more recognition than he has received this year, I believe. I'm a little bit biased, but he's a fabulous horse and only Bob Baffert could have made him the horse that he is."
Paynter also had a 5 furlong work for trainer Bob Baffert, going 1:00 flat under Martin Garcia with the company of stablemate Flashback. He is also headed to the Classic. Trainer Bob Baffert said, "He was a little rusty. But he's doing great now. I think he'll be right there Saturday." He drew post 2 at odds of 12-1 on the morning line.
Chips All In, who is pre-entered in the Turf Sprint, was out for a gallop on the main track this morning. Julien Leparoux will be aboard the 5-1 shot for trainer Jeff Mullins.
Bond Holder was out for a gallop this morning in prep for the Juvenile. Mario Gutierrez will be aboard the 8-1 shot for trainer Doug O'Neill.
Rum Point is another Juvenile contender who was out on the track this morning. Edwin Maldonado will be aboard the 30-1 longshot for trainer Doug O'Neill.
Dance With Fate is also a Juvenile contender who was out on the track this morning. Trainer Peter Eurton said, "We preferred entering him on dirt. He has more points there. I think he's going to be a very good turf horse. I was covering my options. Why not?" After drawing post 2 Eurton added, "I'm OK with it, although I would have preferred more outside."
Tap It Rich, who is also going in the Juvenile, work out 4 furlongs in 48 2/5 for trainer Bob Baffert. Jockey Martin Garcia said, "He's so fast. He's like Speedy Gonzalez!" Mike Smith will be aboard the 6-1 shot on Saturday.
Outstrip went out for a gallop on Monday under exercise rider Willie Ravetto in preparation for the Juvenile Turf after clearing quarantine and was a bit spooked by some of the other horses. Mike Smith will be aboard the 4-1 shot for trainer Charlie Appleby.
Vorda cleared quarantine and went out for a 2 lap gallop of the training track after regular hours were over. She is headed to the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Olivier Peslier gets the call on the 4-1 morning line favorite for trainer Philippe Sogorb.
Indian Jones looked good on the track this morning as he did a couple of laps in preparation for the Marathon. Angel Castillo will be in the irons Friday for trainer Philip Aristone.
