Breeders' Cup Workouts

Date: 11/01/2016

Tuesday morning was again cloudy at Santa Anita with the temperature around 60 degrees. Because California Chrome was scheduled to come out at 6:45 today, we got there just after 6:30am when it was VERY dark since sunrise isn't until 7:15am. Because of the clouds, it stayed dark until nearly 7:30am, so many of the early photos are not as good as I would like. Tomorrow is supposed to be clear, so it should be light earlier and make for better photos.

Here are photos for 66 of the horses on the track Tuesday morning, mostly all different from Monday with repeats only in the Classic and Distaff. Click the small picture to see a larger version.

horse racing breeders cup horse racing breeders cup California Chrome had a strong 1 3/4 mile gallop Tuesday morning.  The 5 yo chestnut returned to his barn via the paddock under regular exercise rider Dihigi Gladney. “Whenever he schools (in the paddock), he knows it's getting closer to race time and he starts getting aggressive," Gladney said. Added assistant trainer Alan Sherman, “He's happy and feeling strong. Wednesday morning we’ll take him to the gate before his gallop.”
horse racing breeders cup Frosted galloped about 1 1/4 miles under exercise rider Rob Massey. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin traveled from New York on Monday and arrived in time to attend the post position draw.  He was pleased that the son of Tapit will start from post 2. “We're happy. We'll save some ground. There weren't any bad posts. We're just happy to be in the race. There is going to be a lot of space and gaps in the 1 1/4 race. The speed will go and there will be gaps. We should be able to work out a good trip. It is the best, we want to be the best and we want to beat the best.”
horse racing breeders cup Hoppertunity jogged around the main track. "(Flavien) Prat was supposed to ride him, but it was hard to take (Velazquez) off after he won on him,” Bob Baffert said. “Prat picked up the mount on Effinex, a very good horse. You never know how things are going to work out.”
horse racing breeders cup Shaman Ghost the Woodward winner, schooled in the starting gate, jogged 1 mile the wrong way and then visited the paddock in preparation for the Classic.
horse racing breeders cup War Story left Barn 69 at approximately 8am with exercise rider Nelson Collazo atop and trainer Mario Serey, Jr., looking on and proceeded to jog 1 1/4 miles around the Santa Anita main track. The 4-year-old gelding makes his fourth start of the season in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, while starting from post seven of 10 at morning line odds of 30-1. “He felt good today,” Collazo said. “He was very happy to be out there after walking for a few days. He went well over the track.” “He looked good,” Serey added. “I was happy with him.”
horse racing breeders cup Win the Space went to the main track at 7:45 a.m. and galloped nearly 1 1/2 miles with regular exercise rider Amelia Green. “Very happy with the way he is coming up to the race,” trainer George Papaprodromou said. “He’s acting good.”
horse racing breeders cup Beholder went to the track at 7:45 a.m. and galloped 1 1/2 mile on the main track under regular exercise rider Janeen Painter. “She’s pumped up,” Painter said of the Distaff contender. “When other horses go by her, I can feel her heart pumping, she feels very strong.”
horse racing breeders cup Corona Del Inca took to the main track at 7:45 a.m. and galloped 1 1/2 mile with jockey Pablo Falero, who got his first feel of the Santa Anita main track. Falero guided the 5yo daughter of Luhuk to a nose victory in the Gran Premio Criadores, earning her a spot in the Distaff.
horse racing breeders cup Curalina galloped 1 1/4 mile Tuesday morning at Santa Anita in preparation for a start in Friday’s Distaff. “The Filly & Mare Sprint appears to be the easier spot, but at the end of the day, we just felt she’s proven more often around two turns and I think she’s also proven that she’s amongst the top of her generation,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “So, we thought the right move was to run her in the race we feel like is better suited to her style.”
horse racing breeders cup Forever Unbridled galloped a lap around the Santa Anita main track for trainer Dallas Stewart and owner-breeder Charles Fipke. An easy winner of the Beldame last out at Belmont, she has trained forwardly since arriving from her Churchill Downs base Oct. 28. “She galloped strong today, she’s tough and she fits right with them here,” Stewart said. “I don’t think she’s overmatched. I think Songbird is going to have to get running early from the rail and Beholder is live and has to get position. Our filly will be sitting in the second flight and Rosario has been riding her and knows her, so we’ll just take it from there."
horse racing breeders cup I'm a Chatterbox took her first tour of the track and paddock area Tuesday with trainer Larry Jones in the irons. “She looks good,” Jones said. “She’s cleaned her bucket every meal since we got here, so we’ve passed the first test. I wish Beholder wasn’t the one to our outside, but we can’t change that. We just had a horrible trip last year. If you’re going to get beat, you want it to be because you just got outrun, not because of a bad trip.”
horse racing breeders cup Land Over Sea, Distaff hopeful galloped 1 1/2 miles Tuesday morning with Gabby Blanchard up. Assistant trainer Leandro Mora supervised the effort while Doug O'Neill was at Los Alamitos.
horse racing breeders cup Songbird galloped 1 1/2 miles at 5:30am and later schooled in the paddock in preparatin for the Distaff. “As part of her usual race preparations, we’ll send her to school in the paddock this morning and let her stand in the gate on Wednesday before her morning gallop,” said Dan Ward, assistant to trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.  “(Post 1 is) really not a concern. She’s drawn the rail three times in the past and you know the result. This is going to be a very tough race, so I look at it as us having the shortest distance home.”
horse racing breeders cuphorse racing breeders cup Stellar Wind stood quietly for three minutes observing the scene, then jogged 1 1/2 miles under exercise rider Ricardo Peniche for trainer John Sadler Tuesday morning. The co-second choice with Beholder at 5-2 behind 6-5 Songbird, Stellar Wind drew post position No. 5, the fourth time in as many starts this year she has gotten that gate assignment. “It seems like a good post to me,” Sadler said. “I think it's fair to say we got a good draw. Whether it’s the best (of the big three) I don't know. It won't affect strategy. We’ll leave that up to Victor (Espinoza). He’s ridden all of her races for us.”
horse racing breeders cuphorse racing breeders cup Accelerate drew post 5 in the Dirt Mile. Tyler Baze gets the call Friday aboard the 20-1 shot.
horse racing breeders cup American Gal worked 4f in 46 seconds, the best of 35 at the distance Tuesday morning, a day after drawing the outside in the Juvenile Fillies, No. 12, post with morning line odds of 6-1. “She worked really good,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “I don't like the draw, being outside like that, but what are you going to do?”
horse racing breeders cup Calgary Cat drew post 6 in the Turf Sprint. Regular rider Luis Contreras will ride the 20-1 morning line shot.
horse racing breeders cup Catch a Glimpse will attempt to earn her second Breeders’ Cup trophy when she takes on older fillies and mares for the first time in the Filly & Mare Turf on Saturday. A winner of last year’s Juvenile Fillies Turf, the daughter of City Zip has earned more than $1.1 million in 2016. Trainer Mark Casse said, “There’s a fair amount of speed in the race, but that’s speed going 1 1/4. She has mile speed and I think she is the speed of the speed. Our plan is to be that speed. We’re going to get up and go.”
horse racing breeders cup Cavale Doree will have the assistance of U.S.-based French jockey Flavien Prat in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. The Christophe Ferland/Flavien Prat combo tasted success at the highest level back in 2013 when winning the Prix Marcel Boussac on Arc Sunday at Longchamp with the 2yo filly Indonesienne.

horse racing breeders cup Home of the Brave jogged in company in preparation for the Turf Sprint. Trainer Hugo Palmer said, “This morning couldn’t have gone better, and I’m very pleased with my horse. I think the Sprint is the better option for him rather that the Mile. If he runs to his best, then I think he can be in the mix, but his best in the Mile might still not be good enough.”
horse racing breeders cup Intricately (Juvenile Fillies Turf) walked and then cantered 1 1/2 miles under jockey Donnacha O'Brien to get used to her new surrounding and then returned to the barn, accompanied by a pony ridden by trainer Joseph O'Brien. “She got a little anxious waiting at the gap, but she was fine after that,” Anne Marie O'Brien, mother of Donnacha and Joseph said. Joseph, who is having his first Breeders’ Cup runner as a trainer reported the filly to be in good shape and when asked by reporters if he missed being a jockey he replied, “The last few months I was riding became quite hard weight-wise. Hopefully, he can work out a smooth trip.”

He'll have to plan a trip from there. He's got tactical speed, so hopefully he'll be in a nice position out front or sitting close on the inside.”
