The first of 13 Grade 1 races this weekend at Churchill Downs was the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) featuring a field of 14 two-year-old fillies going 1 mile on the turf. Newspaperofrecord was sent off as the 3-5 favorite off her win in the Ms. Grillo (G3) at Belmont. In to challenge her included 15-2 Concrete Rose, winner of the Jessamine (G2) at Keeneland and 11-1 Lily's Candle, winner of the Prix Marcel Boussac Criterium des Pouliches (G1) at Longchamp.

Newspaperofrecord draws away in the stretch

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. sent Newspaperofrecord loose on the lead through fractions of 24.06, 48.58, and 1:13.75 while stalked by 18-1 La Pelosa and Concrete Rose. Entering the stretch Newspaperofrecord left the field in her wake, opening up a 5 1/2 length lead through 7f in 1:26.00, and cruising to win by 6 3/4 lengths over 12-1 East in 1:39.00. Left: Newspaperofrecord in the winner's circle. Winning owner Seth Klarman said, "We've never won a Breeders' Cup race, so that's special. I think she's our most spectacular horse. We've never had somebody that emerged so quickly in her career, showed so much promise, and has fulfilled it."

Right: The trophy presentation for the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. said, "I got a perfect trip. She broke good and pulled me to the lead. I just held her together and she relaxed. When I asked her, she exploded for home. It was the easiest Breeders' Cup I ever won."

Left: Newspaperofrecord parades with her flowers. Chad Brown has won 4 of the last 5 editions of the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Right: Newspaperofrecord heads back to the barn after the race. Winning trainer Chad Brown said, "I know everyone is going to be asking about the Coronation at Ascot. This filly is pretty unique. She has good speed from the gate. She handles soft ground. The weather won't be an issue. She's very, very sound. She has a good head on her. This will be the first horse that I have that discussion with Seth when the time comes, but we have a lot of times between now and then to concentrate on her health and make sure she's really in good form if we're going to try something like that. This is something I'll consider more than I ever have."

Left: Second place finisher East returns after the race. Jockey Jamie Spencer said, "She's run very well from the draw that we had. She jumped from the gate and she went right, so I had no option, but to drop her out. This is only the third run in her life and next year, she could be very special."

Right: Third place finisher Stellar Agent in the post parade. Trainer Jorge Abreu said, "When she broke her maiden, she went 5 1/2 (furlongs), then I sent her out to a mile and a sixteenth and she ran a good race (third in the Miss Grillo). Today, it looked like at the eighth-pole, she was going to be fifth, but she came back on for third. I expected this performance from her today, hoped to be second, but I'm happy with third. This is my first time in the Breeders' Cup. It was a very good start."

The fillies break from the starting gate for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Manny Franco aboard Stellar Agent (7) said, "I had a perfect trip. No trouble at all. She gave me all she had all the way to the end."
