Kicking off the 35th World Championships was the newest addition to the series, the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Listed), a 5 1/2 furlong dash around 1 turn of the Matt Winn turf course at Churchill Downs for 2-year-old colts and geldings. Prix d'Arenberg (G3) and Flying Childers Stakes (G2) winner Soldier's Call was sent off as the 5-2 favorite in the field of 12 off his close 3rd in the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp (G1). In to challenge him included 4-1 second choice Bulletin, winner of the Hollywood Beach Stakes in his debut, and 5-1 third choice Sergei Prokofiev, winner of the Cornwallis Stakes (G3) at Newmarket.

Bulletin draws away in the stretch.

Bulletin set the pace of 23.19 and 46.89 down on the hedge while pressed by 25-1 Chelsea Cloisters and stalkd by Soldier's Call. Entering the lane, Bulletin shook off Chelsea Cloisters through 5f in 59.01, and drew off late to a 2 3/4 length win in 1:05.54. It was a length back to 10-1 So Perfect third, while Soldier's Call faded to finish 6th.

Left: Bulletin heads to the winner's circle. Winning trainer Todd Pletcher said, "Fantastic way to start. He broke really well and was sharp.He took it to them the whole way. It was a big race. We wanted to leave there running. He finished up nicely. Nothing like winning one."

Left: Bulletin in the post parade. Winning jockey Javier Castellano said, "He broke like a shot and put me in a real great position. We were in good shape the whole way. I'm very impressed. He was very professional. This is a great way to start off the Breeders' Cup."

Left: Second place finisher Chelsea Cloisters returns after the race. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione said, "The trip worked out perfectly. She broke sharply and put herself where she needed to be. I thought we had the horse in front of us, but when Javier (Castellano) got into him (Bulletin), he had something left. My filly ran huge." Trainer Wesley Ward added, "We knew going in that the turf would be really, really soft and it was but there is nothing you can do about that."

Right: Third place finisher So Perfect heads out on the track before the race. The Aidan O'Brien trainee improved her record to 2 wins, 1 second, and 2 thirds, earning $255,534 for owners Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, and Derrick Smith.


Sixth place finisher and beaten favorite Soldier's Call in the post parade. The Archie Watson trainee has a record of 4 wins, 1 second, and 2 thirds in 8 starts, earning $244.070 for owner Clipper Logistics.
