2009 Sovereign Awards - Canada's equivalent of the Eclipse Awards were handed out on Friday night in Toronto. Champion Turf Male Champs Elysees was named Horse of the Year while owner/breeder Eugene Melnyk won 4 awards. Get the results with vote totals and photos from the ceremony here.

Sovereign Award Finalists - The Jockey Club of Canada has announced the finalists for the equine and human categories for the 2009 Sovereign Awards, Canada's year-end championships. The awards will be given out on January 29.
2009 Eclipse Award Winners - Rachel Alexandra beat out Zenyatta 130 to 99 votes for Horse of the Year and also won Champion 3-year-old Filly. Gio Ponti won both Champion Older Male and Champion Turf Male, while Zenyatta won Champion Older Female and Goldikova won Champion Turf Female. Oldest Kentucky Derby winning jockey passes away - Ira "Babe" Hanford, the oldest kentucky derby winning jockey, passed away on November 21, 2009. He won the Derby as an apprentice aboard Bold Venture in 1936.

Jockey Patrick Husbands wins #2000 - Husbands is one of the top jockeys in Canada and has won the Sovereign Award as outstanding jockey six times. He hit the 2000 career win mark on Sunday October 4, 2009, in the 10th race at Woodbine.

This third edition of his classic handicapping book has been completely updated to include such new innovations as synthetic surfaces, enhanced past performance data, foreign shippers, and new racetracks. A useful book for any handicapper.
