Smarty Jones Retired - He was found to have chronic bruising of the bottom of the cannon bone in all four fetlock joints which would require at least 3 months off, so he has been retired despite more optimistic reports from earlier this week. Details here.
Birdstone wins the Travers - The Belmont winner made his first start since upsetting Smarty Jones a winning one, beating The Cliff's Edge by 2 1/2 lengths. More photos just added.
Evening Attire upsets Funny Cide - The 6-year-old veteran rated behind a hot early pace then came on in the stretch to win by 5 lengths over Funny Cide who was making his spa debut. Results, charts, and photos here.

Phil "P.G." Johnson 1925 - 2004 - The Hall of Fame trainer died Friday August 6 at his Rockville Centre, NY, home at the age of 78. He is probably best known for his upset in the 2002 Breeders' Cup with Volponi and his 36 year win streak at Saratoga.

Ashado dominates in the CCA Oaks - Favorite Ashado took the lead at the half-mile pole and cruised to a 4 1/2 length victory in the Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park.
Cooksey wins the 2004 Venezia Award - Fans, turf writers and jockeys have selected Patricia Cooksey as the recipient of the 2004 Mike Venezia Memorial Award. The award, named after the late jockey, is given to riders who "exemplify extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship."
Free House gone - the winner of the Santa Anita Derby, Pacific Classic, and Santa Anita Handicap died Monday from a fractured skull in an accident at Vessels Stallion Farm, where he stood at stud.

Mike Rowland loses his fight for life - Michael Rowland, injured in an accident at Turfway Park February 4, died early Feb. 9 at University Hospital in Cincinnati as a result of those injuries. He was only 41 years old.
